My computer thinks .exe files are .txt??

WHAT DO I DO!!! Since it thinks everything is .txt (text files?) it won't even let me run anti-virus software! OR system restore! It's really messed up!

I would just reinstall Windows. If you can't reinstall it just by inserting the CD (you might get the same problem as with any other program), then do it like this:

Restart your computer, then when it's starting, press F8 repeatedly. This should bring up the system configuration gizmo...When you get there, change the system boot order (write down what's there originally, so you can change it back later). Change the boot order so that the computer checks the CD drive first, and hard drive second. Save settings and exit. This should restart the computer and open up the installation CD. Follow instructions to install/reinstall.

When that's finished and you have to restart the computer, remove the CD while the computer is restarting.

When all the installation is complete and your exe/txt problem has disappeared, restart the computer and change the boot order to what it was before (most likely Floopy, Hard drive, CD).
