I have a 17 inch laptop Sony VAIO VGN-A790. It seems like recently it is having trouble. It's only 3 years old or so but the fan seems to constantly be running. I just discovered the battery has basically gone bad (can't keep a charge for more than 10 minutes) and there are times it appears to get real slow but then recovers. I have anti-virus software that is updated daily, spy-ware, etc. Besides getting a new computer, any suggestions on how to speed this thing up?

Sony VAIO batteries tend to be expensive - one can buy one for $200. System may also have spyware and viruses which are not detected by the security software.
A clean install may be in order from the Recovery CD/DVD.
