HELP! After removing some bugs on my laptop, it's still not working properly. What should I do?

I have a Dell Inspiron E1505 running WindowsXP. Unfortunately, I was not running any anti-virus/anti-spy software and I got a trojan. I have since installed McAfee Security Center. McAfee found and removed the trojan and 40+ viruses!!! But my laptop is still not functioning properly.

(1.) It's running slow.

(2.) I can't change my desktop background.

(3.) And the most annoying part, I cannot turn off my touchpad. There was an option under control panel before the virus to set the touchpad to turn off when a mouse was connected; but I do not see this option anymore. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

you still have a virus. buy and install PcCillin 2006 or 2007. either that, or the Trojan messed up your User.tmp files. They are what control your account (desktop, settings(touchpad), etc.). try making a new account. if that one has the same problems, you have a virus. if not, the trojan messed up your old account. you can just use the new account. also, you might want to run the repair feature on your Xp, if you still have the disk.
It sounds like the virus' got into your registry and McAfee can not take them out of the Registry, No Virus protection program can, it's not meant to do that.
